FLEXIBILITY-TRAINING PRINCIPLES IN SUMMARY

Two to three sessions a week in addition to the stretching routine you normally perform before an aerobic workout will improve your flexibility. About 5 minutes of stretching should take place before every workout but only after body temperature has been elevated, as indicated by the presence of perspiration following some large-muscle activity such as jogging. It is important to avoid stretching cold muscles. A more concentrated 10-minute session should be used during the cool-down phase of a workout.
All three of the most common methods of stretching (ballistic, static, and PNF) have been shown to be equally effective in improving joint range of motion. Ballistic and PNF methods are more likely to result in injury and muscle soreness than static stretching is.
Stretching should produce only mild discomfort. Pain is an indication of risk of injury from overex-tending soft tissue. Stretching for too long a period of time in an attempt to obtain an extremely high degree of flexibility may also result in injury. Extreme flexibility is unimportant for most individuals and yoga-style contortions should be avoided.
Effective stretching involves a warm-up period, stretching before and after exercise, stretching slowly and gently, holding the stretch for 10 to 30 seconds, and relaxing the body parts other than the muscle group you are stretching.
