For light drinkers (no more than 1/2 oz of alcohol daily for women, 1 oz for men; one or two 12-oz beers, small glasses of wine, or average cocktails) who are well nourished and in good health, the occasional use of alcohol will have little effect on nutrition except for the additional 250-300 kcal. With larger amounts, your nutritional status becomes compromised and several problems occur, such as protein deficiency; failure of intestinal cells to absorb thiamin, folate, and vitamin B12; excretion of increased quantities of magnesium, calcium, potassium and zinc by the kidneys; the dislodging of B6 to create a deficiency that lowers the production of red blood cells; reduced capacity of the liver to activate vitamin D; and numerous other changes. Although proper nutrition is important for those who consume alcohol, it does not prevent changes in the excretion absorption, and utilization of numerous nutrients.
