FLEXIBILITY-TRAINING PRINCIPLES: STRETCHING TO IMPROVE RANGE OF MOTION & REHABILITATION FROM INJURY
Stretching to Improve Range of Motion If your main purpose is to improve body flexibility, you can safely stretch any time you desire—early in the morning, at work, after sitting or standing for long periods of time, when you feel stiff, after an exercise session, or while you are engaged in passive activities such as watching television or listening to music. Remember, you must first elevate body temperature and produce some sweating by engaging in large-muscle group activity before you stretch.
Rehabilitation from Injury When you are recovering from soft-tissue injuries, focus attention on the reduction of pain and swelling, a return to normal strength, and achieving a full, unrestricted range of motion. Unless regular stretching begins as soon as pain and swelling have been eliminated, some loss of flexibility in the injured joint is almost certain.
Ballistic stretching Flexibility exercises employing bouncing and jerking movements at the extreme range of motion or point of discomfort.
Static stretching Flexibility exercises in which a position is held steady for a designated period of time at the extreme range of motion.
Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching A two-person stretching technique involving the application of steady pressure by a partner at the extreme range of motion for a particular exercise and steady resistance to the pressure.
