Just how much flexibility a person needs depends on the person. The gymnast, ballet dancer, and hurdler must be more flexible than those who merely want to maintain a high enough level to reap the health benefits, perform daily activities, and engage in regular exercise.
According to the Virginia Commonwealth University Sportsmedicine Center, orthopedic surgeons are treating more injury cases associated with excessive stretching and attempts to acquire high levels of flexibility than injuries associated with failure to stretch. This may be partially due to a renewed interest in stretching and the popularity of various forms of yoga and aerobics that tend to overemphasize flexibility or use questionable stretching exercises.
How often to Stretch
Those who are just beginning a flexibility-training program should do their routine three to four times a week. After several months, two or three workouts a week will maintain the flexibility you have acquired. As we pointed out previously, stretching should also be a part of the regular warm-up routine prior to participation in aerobics, sports, or other forms of exercise.
